Telemedicine: the future of health
Imagine video chatting with your doctor instead of making an in-person visit. That’s telemedicine and it may be the future of health care.
Telemedicine is the use of medical information exchanged from one site to another through electronic information to provide clinical health care, according to the American Telemedicine Association.
The use of telecommunication to provide health care started more than 40 years ago, at the start of our digital age. The forms of telemedicine include video, email, smartphones, and wireless tools.
As the ATA explains, telemedicine isn’t a separate medical specialty. Rather, it is an extension of hospitals and clinics to invest in their practice and care for more patients. Telemedicine helps eliminate distance barriers and can improve access to medical services that would often not be consistently available in distant rural communities.
Some say this is the future of medicine because it provides improved access and meets patient demand without losing the quality of care that health care institutions strive to meet.
One of the services provided by telemedicine is remote patient monitoring, much like sleep monitoring through SomnologyMD. We monitor sleep from wherever you are – no visit to the doctor required – but we still provide accurate data to help you understand your sleep patterns.
Telemedicine will only continue to grow in popularity – especially among people who crave convenience. Knowing this, Somnology will soon release a new product, the Plex® Sleep Scanner, a sleep tracking wearable device that was designed by a physician with the help of experts in design, engineering, and data.
The device tracks your sleep behavior and breathing patterns, which targets insomnia and snoring as well as detection of abnormal breathing patterns – three issues that may be keeping you from sleeping. The results and data are sent right to your phone. That’s telemedicine.
